From
Dorkas’s Kitchen
August
2013
Last
week we were invited by a lovely family to join them at their home for dinner
and FHE. The first week they saw us in
church they said we needed to have some real Malaysian food. Dorkas is a single mom with 4 grown children,
aging from 14-21. Selica, Ebony, Ivory & Jacob. The oldest daughter, Selica, was in a car
accident months ago. She is a beautiful
miracle! Although she uses a wheelchair
to get around she has learned to stand and hopes to walk again someday.
Elders
Loke and Jahali accompanied us for the activity. These two elders seem to love the shock
treatments we are going through here. One is Chinese, the other is a native from East Malaysia, and both of them will eat anything!
The dinner was spread before us in the frontroom on the coffee table. Only spoons are offered as utensils. Most everything we saw we had never eaten before.

Fried
rice with wild bore = very good.
Soft,
white, mildly sweet fruit with tiny black seeds, dragon fruit = great.
Scrambled
eggs with hot, spicy sauce = good enough.
Dark
green vegies served hot in a vinegar sauce = makes taste buds squeal.
Chicken
chunks cooked in red, spicy powder = quite good.
Little
fish about 6” long, deep fried into crispy critters with guts in and heads on
= salty but tasty. Dad loved these!
Strips
of meat 5” long shaped in half circle, scales on, ribs poking out both sides,
deep-fried golden brown, white meat and quite tough. Python! = feeling very
guilty.
Eating python was definitely a
surprise! We told our guests we didn’t
eat python, we petted them. They were
more surprised than we were!
I took a tuna macaroni salad.

Python, deep-fried!
Love the photos of the food. It was so much fun to 'see' you the other day! The area and food looks fun and adventurous!
ReplyDeleteLove reading your blog! Looks like an adventure!!
ReplyDeleteI love reading your blog. I just figured out how to find the new posts and got all caught up. I can totally relate to the "awkward american-ness" that is an inevitable part of living abroad. I'm glad Dad found someone to make him fried fish. That's totally worth the stairway to heaven! You guys both look really happy. :)
